June 1st... Encore and I took Memorial Day off. Today we went back to work. Two separate training sessions.

Morning session just involved grooming, and picking up his feet. This is a must because he will need his feet done again shortly.

Encore is alright with having his legs touched and brushed. But does not like to stand to have his feet picked up. By the end of the session he would let me pick up all four and hold them for a very short period of time.

Second session, would consist of grooming, saddling, and trying something new. Instead of riding with the reins on his halter, Serenity set up a bosal for me to try.

Encore did not like the bosal being put on him. Which led me to discover that when he is introduced to something new, as far as equipment, his solution is to lay down. Quite the unusual way to try to escape something new.

After a few minutes he accepted it. So we moved to the arena for our usual work out. This got a little interesting at first. He would not stand for me to mount. So we worked on this for a short time until he finally would stand.

Once mounted, I asked him to walk out. His solution was to turn in a circle one way, and then the other. I was being patient, but yet I was determined that we were going to work thru this. I figured out that he got so used to working off of the lead rope on the halter that it was what he was familiar with and most comfortable with, and didn’t feel threatened.

It was time that he learn that sometimes change is a good thing. So with persistence, patience, and determination, we eventually worked thru this. We eventually got thru our normal workout. Except that we did the mounting, dismounting and the workout routine several times before ending the session.

Serenity watched my entire session with Encore today, and she said at the end, and I quote, “he is the typical man, he doesn’t like change”. I guess I have to agree with her on this one.
