July 1st... After a long trek back in the wooded pasture to get Journey, I hopped on her bareback for the first time, lead rope fastened back to the halter for makeshift reins, and rode her back up to the house. She handled well and seemed pretty content.

I had to haul a couple horses today so didn't have much time to ride, but I did saddle her up with the saddle that has full rigging. The rear cinch didn't seem to phase her at all. I didn't get it tight enough (cinch too big), so the saddle crawled up her withers and onto her neck. Bless the little mare's heart she never acted up. W/t/c, whoa, back, sidepass, gave vertically at all three gaits. I have some well broke horses that will not hesitate to protest if the saddle doesn't fit right.
Her whoa is getting so nice, really rounds up, and stops over her hocks with her nose tucked in. Can't wait to share pics when we get some.
Journey is sure proving to be a quiet, good minded and tolerant horse. Her issues of darting out the open gate are nearly non-existant now. Occasionally I have to remind her but she is doing much better.
P.S. This is day two in the shank bit. Next week we will start neck reining. HTML Comment Box is loading comments...
